ICAM-1 Expression in Xenogeneic and Allogeneic Transplantation

Abstract
The field of xenogenic transplantation is confused from the abundance of potential cross-species models and diverse mechanisms of rejection.
So we studied pathologic proceeding of organs rejected by different mechanisms in xenogenic and allogenic models using guinea pigs and Lewis rats as heterotopic heart donors and Wistar rat as recipients.
In xenograft rejection, perivascular edema was the prominent and consistent finding throughout the period. In allograft rejection, endocardial change, interstitial edema and hemorrhage, and myocardial necrosis were important findings and most importantly the diffuse lymphocytic infiltration was progressed gradually until the graft failure from rejection.
ICAM-1 was not expressed in xenogenic heart during rejection process, while in allograft it was expressed on postoperative day 7, which is a later manifestation than the cellular infiltration appeared on postoperative day 3.
This finding illustrates that ICAM-1 expression cannot be an early diagnostic marker in rat allograft as well as xenograft model.
